It’s Fox “News”.
‘Nuff said.
By Madness, November 25, 2009 @ 06:56
What we have here is a fundamental failure to understand pie charts. Either that or Fox News thinks it’s elitist to have things add up to 100%.
By baac, November 25, 2009 @ 07:13
Mmmmmm… pie chart.
By Trainwreckchaser, November 25, 2009 @ 07:23
Right….Fox news is the only website that does stuff like this.
Bet you CNN and MSNBC day would be better.
By jeff, November 25, 2009 @ 08:15
If I gotta “back” ; ) one of em, It’s Palin.
By Lummox JR, November 25, 2009 @ 08:19
Funny, none of them are even ACORN-backed candidates.
By TVGenius, November 25, 2009 @ 08:37
Ummm, no, that’s NOT Fox News. That’s a Fox affiliate.
By Geekyjasperky, November 25, 2009 @ 08:47
Don’t worry. The other 107% back Obama.
By Yudo Nomi, November 25, 2009 @ 09:46
Worst of all, they showed a clip from the 2008 presidential election in the background, claiming it was a Palin rally for 2012.
By kNIGHT, November 25, 2009 @ 10:37
My God! Fox News has branched out from controlling what we know about current events and onto mathematical impossibilities. “This just in Vampires are real and they do sparkle”
By MWS, November 25, 2009 @ 10:55
Well, they hired Rove as an analyst. Maybe he’s also doing “The Math” for them.
By p, November 25, 2009 @ 12:20
What if somebody backs 2 different people to run?
If 5 people asked if they like A B or C,
1) I like A and B
2) B and C
3) B
4) I like them all!
5) B and A.
60% support A
100% supports B
40% Supports C
(ZOMG that’s over 100% lolz!)
By MLD, November 25, 2009 @ 17:16
This could be a poll that allows people to choose more than one option (though NORMALLY, those polls would say “results may be greater than 100% somewhere on them)
By Chuck, November 25, 2009 @ 18:16
Math is for commies, the only numbers true americans need to know are how many stars are on the flag!
Um, its 97, right?
By jeff, November 25, 2009 @ 18:31
Yeah. Fuck Fox news. Next thing you know, they’ll be claiming that all the Global warming data for the lat 10 yrs is absolute bullshit and Al Gore is not a scientist, but a hypocritical douche bag.
By Madness, November 25, 2009 @ 21:05
Hey, Jeff, I know you wish that were true. It’s easier for you to continue being a douche that way!
By jeff, November 25, 2009 @ 21:11
Step away from the bong, Madness.
By Bryan, November 26, 2009 @ 00:52
For each candidate they could ask the people they’re polling if they would back them or not. Therefore having over 100% would be an inevitability and possibly explain why 70% back Palin.
By Nulono, November 26, 2009 @ 09:47
Not to be a wet blanket, but I think they just used the wrong chart, as there’s bound to be some overlap in support.
By DJ, November 26, 2009 @ 17:09
The problem is the pie chart. Pie charts have to add up to 100%. For a question where you can back multiple candidates (a perfectly valid poll) a bar graph would have been much better, or even a venn diagram. The pie chart they created ends up looking just plain silly, and it becomes clear that they don’t understand pie charts or statistics.
By blackwatertown, November 27, 2009 @ 04:28
Great post. I can hardly believe it’s genuine. And hat tip to DJ above for the explainer on pie charts.
By Tyler, November 27, 2009 @ 07:39
Thank you DJ! By definition a pie chart must contain mutually exclusive categories and must add up to 100%. The question isn’t the poll choice which presumably lets them pick more than one candidate, but their graph choice which is terrible!!
By Chuck, November 27, 2009 @ 20:52
I think this pie chart was made by Verizon, since they believe that basic math is a matter of opinion.
By Creative Anarchy, December 6, 2009 @ 22:53
Isn’t it redundant for Fox to list the source as “Opinion” ?
